I used to wait every year for Contraband Days to come to Lake Charles. It was two weeks of festivals, food, music, and FUN. The present people on the committee must be about one foot from their graves. They have turned it into an old folks event to show off their kids dance class skills, beauty queens from 2 months old to God knows what age. They don't even let you play your music on your boat loud enough to hear it, you can't dance anymore, and it's about as exciting as paying your taxes. They need some new people on the committee, and for starters, they need to visit the Jazz Festival in Natchitoches, La to see how a town really throws a festival. Charge a flat fee to attend, park, the whole time, and you will get 1000's of people attending again.
This use to be one of the best festivals in Louisiana! What has happened! There use to be bathtub races bed races and fishing rodeos as well as boat races. All of that is gone. People use to come for miles to get in on the fun. There were events for two weekends and lots of bands and street dances. Now it is only one weekend long and a very lame excuse for a festival. This was an event celebrating our history everyone dressed as pirates and got in on the fun. There use to be a large parade with lots of floats and marching bands. Now it is only a carnival with very few rides, and no one goes. How very sad. Hope the new mayor will revive it. It could once again bring in money for the city Compare all that there use be, to the now arm wrestling contest. Very very SAD!,,
Its my favorite fair. :) I love it. :)
It used to be more about Pirates, now it is more a name for just another festival. They really should change the name as it no longer represents what it is.
Wow Contraband sucks now! I remember growing up and waiting every year for contraband days to come around. I moved out of town and still made the trip back for it when i could, but haven't been in quite some time. Last time i was there it is in no way the old festival i used to love. They never used to charge for festival it was free to get in, you could bring your own ice chest with food and beverages and the free concerts were top of the line. Now it has turned into just another money sucking tourist trap with $25 entry fees and of course absolutely no ice chest or drinks (this way they can gouge you for 8 bucks on a small glass of beer) and the entertainment has gone from awesome to watching a bunch of little kiddie dance classes. If you wanna see the good concert you pay just like everything else. You might have a good time if you drop a grand on stupid stuff but other than that it definitely not worth it. Well at least i have my memories of a real festival to live with because i am never going back to this one, and i will try as much as possible to discourage any of my friends or family from attending as well. If i want to have a good time ill spend my money in a bar at home. At least i wont be forced to watch little Bettys dance recital..lol
Well, If you are expecting the Jolly Roger or Pirate theme things and attractions. You will be very Disappointed. Contraband Days Has just enough pirate type stuff to keep from being sued for false advertising.
